With nearly 30 years of experience in Intellectual Property (IP) Law, Hoda Barakat has actively participated in various local, regional, and international associations. Emphasizing the strength found in professional unity, she currently serves as the President of the International Association for the Protection of IP in the UAE (AIPPI UAE), as Board member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), and a Board member of the Emirates IP Association.
Hoda’s Story: Discovering my passion for associations
Today, the world is open to all. Globalization is a reality that we all live with, so there is no escaping or hiding from the international nature of our work, irrespective of our profession. International Associations allow us to share best practices easily and to learn from others all over the world. I would strongly encourage others to explore the fascinating work of international associations.
Hoda’s Approach: #InspireInclusion through mentorship
Working in the legal profession meant that I was often the only woman in a room full of men, especially 25 to 30 years ago. While that has improved, this lack of diversity still exists and can be intimidating to those who are ‘different’ from the majority. I believe in mentoring other women and leading by example, so the motto of « inspire » is very apt. This applies to the inclusion of everyone.
Hoda’s Perspective: On the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion for associations
DEI is vital to the success of all organizations, including associations, which are a snapshot of the members they represent. Without the input and contributions of all, there are vast areas which will not be considered. Everybody contributes something, and we want to encourage everyone to play their part to ensure growth and strength in the community.
Hoda’s Initiatives: Actions and Inspirations for fellow association leaders
I am pleased to say that at AIPPI UAE we have 3 female Board members and numerous female members active in the Association. We are actively working on including female speakers at events and signed an MOU with the European Women Association. We have also focused on developing the younger generation and established a Young Members Committee, which is chaired by a woman.
